Portable AC units can cool small rooms (150-250 sq ft) but struggle with larger spaces, Bay Area heat, or poor insulation. They're less efficient than window units or central AC, and the exhaust hose leaks warm air back into the room. For reliable whole-home cooling, central AC or mini splits are better long-term investments.

Watch for: warm air from vents, weak airflow, unusual noises (grinding, squealing), higher energy bills without usage change, moisture or leaks around the unit, bad smells from vents, or the system cycling on/off frequently. Any of these signs means call EVS for a diagnostic — catching issues early prevents expensive breakdowns.

1. Turn off your AC system at the thermostat. 2. Locate the filter (usually behind the return air vent or in the air handler). 3. Remove the filter and check if it's disposable or reusable. 4. If disposable, replace it with a new one (same size). If reusable, vacuum both sides or rinse with water and let dry completely. 5. Reinstall and turn the system back on. Clean or replace every 1-3 months during cooling season.

You can rinse reusable filters with water, but never spray water directly into the AC unit or electrical components. For outdoor condenser cleaning, turn off power first, gently spray the fins from inside-out to remove debris, and avoid bending the delicate fins. For deep cleaning, call EVS — improper DIY cleaning can damage components or void warranties.

Call for emergency service if: your AC fails during a Bay Area heat wave (95°F+), you smell burning or electrical odors, you hear loud metal-on-metal grinding, the breaker trips repeatedly, or you see smoke. Non-emergency issues (reduced cooling, higher bills) can wait for regular business hours. EVS prioritizes same-day emergency service during heat waves.

Bay Area AC issues include: refrigerant leaks (causes warm air), clogged condensate drains (moisture buildup), dirty evaporator coils (reduced cooling), undersized systems for valley heat (San Jose, Cupertino), oversized systems for fog belt homes (no dehumidification), and electrical issues from old panels. Regular maintenance prevents most of these problems.

Repair if: the unit is under 8 years old, repair cost is less than 50% of replacement cost, and it's a single component failure. Replace if: the unit is 12+ years old, uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out), needs frequent repairs, or has a major component failure (compressor, condenser).
